ASAP: After School Activities Program
ASAP is a PTA volunteer-run program that offers after-school enrichment classes in three separate 6-week sessions each school year. The sessions are offered in Fall, Winter and Spring. Watch for quarterly sign-ups in PTA emails/newsletters–some classes fill quickly!

Back-to-School Night (BTSN)
Back-to-School Night is held for parents only on a weekday evening shortly after the beginning of the school year. This is your opportunity to see your child's classroom, meet the teacher, learn about the curriculum, and get a glimpse of your child's daily life at school. BTSN starts with a welcome from the Principal and PTA President in the gym then a visit to respective classrooms.

Back-to-School Picnic
The Back-to-School Picnic is a fun social evening held soon after the beginning of the school year, typically on a Friday evening. All Seldens Landing families are welcome. Bring your own dinner for a picnic on the school grounds. The PTA adds life to the party by arranging for a DJ and dessert. This is a casual evening to get to know school staff and parents of other children in your child's class.

Back-to-School Supplies
For your back-to-school shopping convenience, shop for your child’s SLES supplies list with the PTA’s partner, School Toolbox. The customizable boxes (take out what you already have or add what you’d like to stock up on) can be sent directly to your home AND 10% of your total order will come back to support our school.

A Boosterthon Fun Run is more than exercise! This is SLES PTA's major fundraiser of the year. It incorporates fitness, educational functions, and fundraising all in one.

Box Tops

Seldens Landing participates in the General Mills Box Tops for Education program to earn free money $$$ for the school. 10 TOPS = $1.00 for our school! It is as easy as clip, collect and give them to your teacher! You can do this when you shop online too. Seldens Landing's lifetime earnings through May 2014 is $9,107.91, with $2564 being earned in the last 2 years.

PTA Meetings
PTA Meetings generally are held on third Wednesdays of the month in the Teachers’ Lounge. Meeting times will vary from morning, after school and evening.

PTA Membership
The Seldens Landing PTA brings the parent community and teachers together to achieve higher goals at Seldens Landing Elementary School (SLES).

We are devoted to the educational success of children and the promotion of parent involvement in our school. Membership in the PTA helps support educational and recreational activities, technology, and improvements for our school.

Members have the right to vote at PTA meetings.

Members actively participate in guiding our activities along with attending PTA-sponsored fun events.

All PTA members are welcome at monthly PTA meetings during the school year, though it is not mandatory to attend meetings. This is a great way to stay informed on what is going on at Seldens Landing.

Sign up at our membership table at Back-to-School events or on the PTA website.

Reflections Program
All children deserve opportunities to explore and be involved in the arts.

The National PTA Reflections program is PTA’s cornerstone arts program. It was developed in 1969 by Colorado’s PTA President Mary Lou Anderson to encourage students to explore their talents and express themselves. Since then, the Reflections Program has inspired millions of students to reflect on a specific theme and create original artwork. Each year, students in Grades Pre-K through 12 are recognized for bringing the theme to life through dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts.

In 2012, the Special Artist Division emerged as an optional division for students whose physical, cognitive, or mental health challenges meet ADA guidelines. Please check with Virginia’s PTA office regarding state availability, guidelines and rules.

The theme for the 2016-2017 school year is What Is Your Story?. Please review the General Rules, and the rules about Dance, Photography, Visual Arts, Film Production, Music Composition, Literature and Special Artist. Then, print out the Student Entry Form to enter by October 2016! We are looking for volunteers to chair Reflections. Please contact us if you are interested.

Room Parents
A room parent facilitates communication between parents and the teacher, school administration and/or PTA and supports the teacher in needs that may arise. Sign up during Back-to-School Night in September!

School Sign
The sign in front of the school at the parking lot entrance is regularly updated by a PTA volunteer with dates and events on the school and the PTA's calendars.

SOLs: Virginia Standards of Learning Tests
The Standards of Learning for Virginia Public Schools describe the commonwealth's expectations for student learning and achievement in grades K-12 in English, mathematics, science, history/social science, technology, the fine arts, foreign language, health and physical education, and driver education.

These standards represent a broad consensus of what parents, classroom teachers, school administrators, academics, and business and community leaders believe schools should teach and students should learn. In 2010 and 2011, The Board of Education followed the commonwealth’s established process for adopting and revising the Standards of Learning to ensure that instructional standards in Virginia public schools equal or exceed those for schools in states that have adopted the Common Core State Standards.

Spirit Nights
The PTA partners with local businesses to have Spirit Nights for Seldens families on specific nights. A percentage of that night’s sales comes back to the PTA.

Spirit Wear Fridays
You will see teachers and staff sporting their red/white/black SLES gear on Fridays. Join in the Seldens Landing excitement and wear red, white, and/or black with them! The PTA sells SLES Spirit Wear at PTA events.

Spooky BINGO
The PTA plans a spooktacular evening each Fall with BINGO, raffles, a parade around the gymnasium and a Halloween costume contest. Everyone is invited to dress up!

Staff Appreciation
We love our teachers, staff and Principal at SLES! During a special week in Spring (usually May), the PTA coordinates special activities and treats to show them our appreciation of the hard work they do for our children. Wonderful Wednesdays (parent-catered lunches) are held throughout the year, too.

Teacher And Parental Support Project (TAPS)
The PTA TAPS project committee encourages SLES teachers to provide a “hands-on” enhanced curriculum in the classroom by providing funding and volunteers.

Teachers bring their ideas to the PTA TAPS committee by way of application. The committee consists of SLES parents whose children’s ages represent each grade level.

Since the PTA TAPS program began, many exciting projects have been approved and incorporated into the curriculum. Examples include:

Lego Robotics

Plant Cams

Science Investigation Kits

Roller Coaster Tracks

Reading Composition games

Recipe for Reading Multi-Sensory Kits

K’Nex sets

Any amount of time or service that you bring to our campus makes your child's school a better place. Don't be afraid! We're a great group of parents, which is what makes our community so special. Welcome to SLES!
The Welcoming Committee ensures that families new to Seldens Landing have all the resources and information needed to make the transition to SLES easy, informative and fun! The unknowns for a new family may range from how to buy Spirit Wear, School events or Volunteering. We are here to help you! Email us.

Wonderful Wednesdays
To show appreciation for our teachers and staff, Wonderful Wednesdays are held once a month. Parents provide lunch with a variety of dishes and desserts, either homemade or store bought. Themes for lunch include Italian, Taco Bar, Chili Cook-off... Look for the sign-up menu link in PTA emails to bring a dish just once or every month on the PTA website! The teachers really look forward to these treats!

World Tour
World Tour is a school-PTA coordinated event in Spring where SLES families can share their family's culture or tell about countries they have lived in or visited. Students love to get their passports stamped as they learn about other countries and get a glimpse into various cultures.
